Dua hari lalu saya mengikuti sebuah seminar di salah satu hotel berbintang di Surabaya. Seminar yang diadakan oleh HP Indonesia ini membahas mengenai server yang terdiri dari server tipe rack dan blade server, networking device, dan juga notebook HP. Seminar tersebut berlangsung sekitar 4 jam, dan di akhir acara ada pengundian doorprize berupa netbook HP Mini 110-1169TU dan Blackberry Gemini. Sebelum pengundian doorprize dilakukan saya sempatkan untuk berdoa mudah2-an bisa dapat salah satunya dan… ternyata doa saya dikabulkan! Puji Tuhan! Jadi hari itu saya pulang seminar sambil menenteng netbook baru gratis dari HP..

Netbook mungil dengan layar 10.1 inch ini dilengkapi processor Intel® Atom™ Processor N280 1.66 GHz, 512 KB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB. Memory yang dipakai adalah DDR2 533 MHz sebesar 1 GigaByte (cukup besar untuk ukuran netbook). Demikian juga harddisk yang terpasang mempunyai kapasitas 160 GB. Perlengkapan lain yang ada di netbook ini juga cukup lengkap, meliputi : webcam, 802.11b/g WLAN, bluetooth, dan battery 3-Cell Lithium-ion (28Whr).

Samba adalah sebuah server yang bisa digunakan untuk sharing file dan printer. Anda bisa membuat sendiri sebuah server Samba dengan instalasi yang sangat mudah, bahkan bisa dilakukan hanya dalam 30 menit saja! Yang akan saya jelaskan berikut ini adalah instalasi Samba dengan sistem operasi CentOS (Linux) di sebuah CPU mulai dari nol alias kosongan.

Keuntungan menggunakan Samba dibanding Windows XP :
1. Jumlah koneksi user tidak terbatas. Di Windows XP Pro koneksi terbatas hanya 10 user saja.
2. Gratis!

Yang anda butuhkan :
1. Sebuah CPU, bisa Pentium 3 atau Pentium 4 dengan RAM (memory) yang cukup (disesuaikan dengan jumlah user/client)
2. Sebuah drive DVD.
3. Instaler CentOS versi 5 (download ISO file, dan burn ISO file tersebut ke dalam DVD)

Install CentOS dari DVD

1. Booting dari DVD CentOS yang telah di-burn

2. Lakukan instalasi CentOS sampai selesai

- Tidak perlu instal paket2 tambahan (seperti Desktop Gnome, Desktop KDE, Server, dsb..)
- Berikan IP static utk server tsb

3. Setelah proses instalasi selesai, komputer akan restart. Setelah itu masukkan login “root” dan passwordnya.

Sekarang kita akan menginstal paket Samba dari DVD CentOS

1. Agar DVD dapat dibaca (dibrowse isinya), maka harus di-mount dulu

mount -t auto /dev/dvdrw-hda /mnt

note:
- Drive yang saya pakai adalah DVDRW.
- Hasil dari command mount tersebut bisa dibrowse di directory /mnt
